24% of CISOs actively looking to leave their jobs

In the world of business, there are certain jobs that carry a lot of weight and importance. Among these are the roles of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Chief Security Officer (CSO), and Chief Information Officer (CIO). These individuals are in charge of keeping company data safe and making sure everything related to information technology runs smoothly. However, a recent study has shown that a surprising number of these top security pros are not just willing to consider a new job, but are actively looking for one.

Nearly 25% of enterprise security executives, specifically in the US and UK, are in this boat. This comes from a study by BlackFog Research. Another 50% say they’re open to offers, which means most would take the opportunity to jump ship if it came along. That’s a big deal in a field where trust and stability are keys to success.

So why are so many of these security leaders ready to leave? A lot of it comes down to the pressures of the job. There’s a lot at stake—if a big data breach happens on their watch, they fear they might lose their jobs. Also, climbing the ladder in this field is tough. Once you reach the top security roles, the only way up usually means a move to a different company that might offer more money.

The stress and responsibility can be overwhelming, leading to burnout and dissatisfaction. The career lifespan for a CISO at a company is often short, around 18 to 24 months. As they near the two-year mark, many start looking ahead for their next challenge.

This is a sign of a bigger issue in the business world. Keeping top executives around can be tough without the right incentives, like stock options or pensions. However, even those don’t seem as effective as they used to be in keeping leaders tied to a company.

So what’s next for these high-level security pros? Many aim for a higher position in a company of the same size or a similar role in a larger, more renowned company. But the stress is real, and some are considering roles like a virtual CISO, which might offer less pressure.
