Atende refused to pay the ransom, and now pays the price

The internet can be a risky place, especially for companies with lots of important files and data. Atende, a well-known company in Poland that works with technology, had to face this danger head-on. Someone sneaked into their computer system and stole all kinds of private information, including contracts and personal details.

Atende has been in business since 1991, and they take care of all sorts of tech needs, like security, which is why it’s pretty ironic that they were the ones to get hit. They’re a big company, making over $72 million in 2023. But even with all that success, they were not safe from cyber thieves.

These thieves got away with a massive 1.2 TB of Atende’s data – we’re talking 15 years’ worth of contracts, emails, and sensitive info. Apparently, the same bad guys have hit other Polish companies and have caused trouble all over the world.

Atende didn’t stay quiet about it. They reported the theft to the police, cybercrime fighters, the government’s data protection office, and Poland’s computer emergency response team right after they found out on October 4th.

They also warned everyone to watch out for tricky emails pretending to be from Atende employees. The cyber criminals could try to dupe people into giving away private information.

The good news? Atende was ready to act fast. They cut off the server that was broken into and added extra security steps. One example is making sure everyone accessing their system uses two steps to log in, which is safer.

They even had experts from outside the company look over their systems to check everything and make sure their defenses are strong.

Atende chose not to pay the cyber criminals any money. They believe that if you give in, it only encourages more crime. It’s a tough choice, but they’re standing strong against the bad guys. They also warned that if anyone tried to share the stolen info, there would be serious legal problems.

This whole situation shows how serious cybercrime is and how it can hit anyone, anytime. Protecting your company’s data is crucial, and taking the right steps before and after an attack can make a huge difference.
