Recently, the big technology company Dell Technologies had a tough time with its online security. Hackers, people who break into computer systems, have stolen lots of information from Dell not just once, but twice in only one week. For everyone to understand better, it’s like if someone got into your locked house and took some private things, and then did it again a few days later.
The first time, the hacker showed a small piece of what they took on a website known for sharing stolen stuff. They even said they would give more information for just a few cents. They claimed that they got details from over 10,000 Dell workers and their business friends. The things stolen included their full names, job IDs, and other important numbers that are like a secret work ID.
Then, just when everybody was trying to understand what happened, the same hacker, who goes by the name “grep”, and their hacker friend “Chucky” said they did it again. This time, they took even more – 3.5GB of data which is a lot of information.
Someone smart about technology, Stephen Kowski, reminded us that this kind of theft shows that even big companies like Dell, which make computers and other tech stuff, can have weak spots. The stolen information can be used by bad people to trick employees into giving more information or money (this is called phishing or social engineering).
Even though Dell knows about it and is looking into what happened, they haven’t told everyone openly about it yet. The hacker warned Dell that time is ticking, hinting at rules that say you have to tell people quickly if their data was taken.
The hacker got into Dell’s systems using a weakness in software tools made by a company called Atlassian. These tools help companies organize their work.
This “grep” hacker is not new to this. They have been known for causing trouble online for a couple of years, and they are kind of like the group Anonymous that stands up to governments and big companies. This hacker also recently broke into another company and took a lot of their information.
This isn’t the first time this year Dell had a data breach. Before, in May, there was a big breach when the data of 49 million customers was exposed. We are still waiting to see how Dell responds to all that’s happened.
It’s clear that data security is a big deal, and companies need to be ready for these types of threats.
