Technology is changing the game for everyone, even for people who are up to no good. Folks at Netcraft, a web security company, have found out that some people are using a cool kind of technology called generative artificial intelligence, or genAI for short, to create fake websites that look real.
This tech helps them make sites with product descriptions so good that it’s hard to tell they’re fake. But, in late July and early August, Netcraft spotted a whole bunch of these phony shopping sites. One bad actor was setting them up super fast with the help of genAI.
Usually, we think a website is okay if it has professional English. Now, that’s not enough. Some of these sites and emails created by bad guys might have weird phrases that don’t fit in, which is a sign something’s not right. There was this one phishing email – that’s a trick email trying to fool you into giving away personal info – which was almost perfect, except for an odd sentence like, “Certainly! Here are 50 more phrases for a family photo.” That’s a big hint it was written by a machine, not a person.
And just like in school, when someone copies someone else’s work, these criminals copy good fake content they see and use it for their own scams. They just switch out a few words so it’s not exactly the same.
These tech tricks used to make fake sites don’t just stop at shopping sites. They’re also used to trick search engines and pull more victims in.
But it’s not only about making fake websites. These cyber con artists use similar tech to do their homework on people they want to trick, gathering info and figuring out the best way to trick them. There’s a whole list of techy tricks they might use over at something called MITRE ATLAS.
As amazing as this technology is, it also means we can’t trust everything we see or read online, even if it looks professional. People who want to protect themselves need to stay on their toes now more than ever.
And that’s where Diversified Outlook Group comes in. They understand that the world of cybersecurity is always changing, and they know how to help you stay safe. These tech tricks might be getting more clever, but you don’t have to handle them on your own. If you’re looking to protect yourself or your business from these new tricky threats, you can reach out to the pros at Diversified Outlook Group at support@diversifiedoutlookgroup.com for smart security solutions.
