Romanian energy supplier Electrica hit by ransomware

In recent news, Romania’s been hit with some serious cyber problems. First, their presidential election had to be stopped because of cyberattacks that likely came from outside the country, including a big push on the social media app TikTok from sources that might be controlled by Russia. Now, there’s another cyber problem. This time, a big electric company named Electrica has been attacked by hackers.

Electrica is a big deal in Romania. It gives power to 3.8 million customers! The company told everyone on December 9 that they were hit by a cyberattack and that they’re looking into it with national cybersecurity teams. The big boss of Electrica, Alexandru Aurelian Chirita, said that the most important systems are okay. They had to turn some things off temporarily, but that was just to protect their tech stuff. The most important thing for them is to keep the lights on for people and make sure everyone’s personal and job-related data is safe.

Even though Electrica hasn’t said too much about what type of attack it was, the Energy Ministry spilled the beans – it was a ransomware attack. That’s when hackers block access to a company’s files until they get paid. But luckily, the attackers didn’t mess with the systems that control the power itself. Those are safe and running on their own.

Now, who did this? We don’t really know. But since there was trouble with the election that pointed to Russian hackers, some folks think it might be the same group causing trouble for Electrica.

All of this hacker business – with elections and now the electricity – shows that cybersecurity is super important. It’s not just about keeping a website running; it’s about ensuring that lights stay on and elections are fair. If you or your company wants to stay safe from these types of attacks, it’s crucial to have good defenses in place.
