Security spending signals major role change for CISOs and their teams

As companies get more and more tech-savvy, they’re starting to spend big bucks on ways to keep their digital stuff safe from hackers and online troublemakers. Think of it like setting up a security system for your house, but instead of just hiring a guard, you’re also getting fancy alarms and cameras that are smart enough to warn you when something fishy is going on.

Gartner, a big-name company that knows a lot about tech trends, says that next year, businesses will spend 15% more cash on smart software to protect their data and online operations. We’re looking at a jump from $184 billion to a whopping $212 billion by the end of 2025! This includes protection for apps, private information, and stuff that’s stored in the cloud – that’s like the digital space where you keep your info so you can get it anywhere, anytime.

What’s really interesting is that even though these businesses are planning to put more money into these smart security systems, they’re not planning to hire a bunch more people to manage them. In fact, a recent report showed that the number of people working in cybersecurity has barely grown at all, even though we really need more of these experts to help keep things safe. About two-fifths of professionals think the main reason for this issue is not having enough money to hire the talent they need.

This tricky situation has made some important changes happen. Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs – these are the top-dog security experts in companies) are having to think differently about their jobs. They’re not just watching out for daily digital dangers; they’re also planning out big-picture stuff, like how to follow rules that keep information safe and how to explain “tech talk” to the other big bosses in the company.

On top of that, the CISOs are working more with outside experts and super-smart tools powered by AI, or artificial intelligence. AI is like giving a computer a brain that can learn and make decisions. This is both super helpful and a little bit scary since hackers can use AI to make their attacks smarter and harder to stop. So, CISOs need to be sharp and make sure their teams are up-to-date with the latest in tech smarts.

It’s kind of like a hybrid situation where companies mix their in-house team with outside help and really smart machines. This can work really well if CISOs know how to mix it all together in the right way.

As we look ahead, lots of questions arise about how cybersecurity jobs will look in the future. Will there still be enough roles for everyone who’s learning all about protecting digital worlds? Companies can’t just think about the cool new tech; they need smart humans in the mix too.

With all these twists and turns, CISOs are really at a turning point. They have to balance their in-house knowledge with help from outside, all without putting their company at risk. It’s about matching their tech with what their business really needs.
